How Our Food Influences Our Mood
Understanding the link between diet and mental health is now more important than ever. While the classic fish and chips, ice-cream and pizza might be tempting; making healthier food choices not only nurture our bodies, but also our mental wellbeing.
Diets rich in fruits, veggies, whole
grains, lean meats, and healthy fats are associated with lower rates of
depression, anxiety, and chronic diseases. Therefore, swapping unhealthy snacks and drinks for nuts, seeds, and juicy fresh fruits, can make a difference to our mood and energy levels, helping us maintain a good energy level all day long.
It’s also worth noting that the gut and brain are closely
connected. A balanced diet that includes fibre, probiotics, and plenty of water
supports a healthy gut, which can positively influence mental health. Many are now turning to fermented foods and drinks like yoghurt, kimchi and kombucha to boost
their gut health, which may in turn help reduce stress and improve mood.
Of course, food isn’t a magic fix for all mental health
challenges, but making mindful choices can be an important part of a holistic
approach. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start small—add an extra serve of
veggies to your dinner, or swap the arvo biscuit for a handful of almonds. And
remember, it’s always a good idea to seek advice from a GP or nutritionist if
you’re concerned about your mental health or diet.
Supporting mental wellbeing is about more than just what we
eat, but every step towards a balanced diet count. So next time you’re at the
servo grabbing a snack, consider how your choice could affect both your
physical and mental health. After all, a nourished mind starts with a nourished
body.
