The Downside of a Christian Life
Last week, i shared with you some ups about leading a Christian life, in these last days! And today, i want to address the other side of the argument, we often don't talk about-the cons of being a Christian.
When we get saved (our spiritual eyes being open) it can lead to a self-righteous attitude in some of us! I know this fact, because i fell into that box in the early days. When i newly found CHRIST: i judged everyone around me by Bible standards. I was impatient with any associate who wasn't moving fast along in their Salvation journey (my older brother being my biggest victim), i looked at everyone i came across with a spiritual lens of perfection-judging and condemning. At a point, it felt like in all of Australia, i was the only righteous person-bound for Heaven; everyone else is doomed... Six years and many phases of Salvation journey later, i realized how wrong i was! And thankfully; I've made positive strides in my relation to the world around me. Hence this post! I wanted to share some pitfall to watch out for, in your spiritual JOURNEY. In no order:
Risk of Legalism and Judgment
This is one of the charges i could have been found guilty of; had CHRIST not pay for my sins. As an early convert, i was all about ticking spiritual boxes; than building human connections. And when a Christian becomes overly focused on rules rather than relationship, they risk legalism-pushing people away. Some Christians may emphasize outward conformity over inner transformation: which can lead to judgmental attitudes, exclusion, or a lack of grace for those who struggle or differ. Thus, legalism obscures the central message of grace and reconciliation in Christian teaching.
Social and Cultural Challenges
Leading a Christian life means standing apart from prevailing cultural norms, which often leads to misunderstanding. Associates may think you're suddenly acting weird; causing tensions. Also, a true Christians may encounter stereotypes, criticism, or exclusion because of their faith. Thus, balancing faith convictions with societal expectations can be complex and emotionally taxing. These challenges often lead some to abandon their Faith, unfortunately.
High Standards and Personal Struggles
This is one of many boxes i fell into at the onset, my obsession with being perfect in everything. This is because, the Christian teachings invite adherents to a high standard of conduct in all aspect of life. Which can be daunting or overwhelming, sometimes. Striving for moral purity and self-control is a lifelong process that most amateur Christians don't understand. Thus, failure to attain these qualities immediately leads to a feeling of guilt or inadequacy; where the new convert fear, they're disappointing God and their community. The call to forgive, love enemies, and serve sacrificially is inspiring, but not always easy or comfortable to adhere.
Doubts and Uncertainty
Sacrifices and Limitations
The Christian life often requires sacrifice—JESUS CHRIST the greatest example. John 3: 16. Whether in lifestyle, ambition, or relationships; faithful living may mean abstaining from certain activities or opportunities that conflict with your Christian values. Pursuing a path of service over self-interest can involve material (losing some opportunities because they go against your Biblical believes) or social (being isolated by associates who can no longer tolerate your higher standards) cost. Thus, navigating life by today's standards can be difficult.
Despite these challenges, the Christian life remains deeply enriching. Its
teachings inspire us to serve others, pursue justice, leading to a life of meaning, of hope and community, whilst offering the opportunity for profound transformation. Though, it's not without difficulty. The challenges of
living out your faith (in a complex world) are real. It requires courage, grace, and perseverance. I hope you're inspired.
Be blessed!
